The only Dutchman with half a fame as a musician was Herman Brood. But I suspect his fame was mainly due to his ... wild romance with extravagant Nina Hagen and to his passing after a majestic and voluntary jump from the roof of a big Amsterdam hotel.Luc Charliernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6219646897587177986.post-60382939105395968722011-02-07T15:28:14.629+01:002011-02-07T15:28:14.629+01:00Yes, and I will return to both Vermeer and Hammers...Yes, and I will return to both Vermeer and Hammershoi, as well as to perhaps the greatest of all Dutch painters, one Rembrandt van Rijn. I was listeing to a record of Jeff Beck the other day and it occurred to me that Beck is the Rembrandt of modern guitar players, able to do fast mood sketches as well as symphonia, always melodic, often very powerful. Could be an interesting subject but I am not sure how to get the music to play alongside the pictures on a blog.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15635428184895066582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6219646897587177986.post-58451330487613790802011-02-07T13:23:47.517+01:002011-02-07T13:23:47.517+01:00When you presented Hammershoi’s work, you had prom...When you presented Hammershoi’s work, you had promised Vermeer would come in his own right, when time would allow. I love this man’s work. I know I’m normally VERY prejudiced against the Dutch, and I blame myself for it. But it has been transcribed in my DNA for generations, imprinted in a manner even retrovirusses cannot mimick. I often defend the view Holland (as opposed to the old “Netherlands”, the Lower Countries) is home to pragmatic, materialistic, uncultivated merchants who cannot enjoy decent food, brew decent beer or ale, make acceptable music, write a book (if you except the Jewish part of their population , excellent novellists when they go for it), say something sweet ... you just name any human activity I appreciate. But they’ve always had admirable painters, and they can play soccer!<br />I’m truly ashamed of this racist approach, Léon shouldn’t tackle the world like that, I confess.Luc Charliernoreply@blogger.com
